The True Cost & Benefits Of Trump’s Border Wall

Immigration, more accurately, illegal immigration has been a hot topic for several years.  However, it has sparked a seemingly inextinguishable fire in the panties of liberals over the last month or so of president Trump’s administration.  Setting aside the hypocrisy of the left when they had no issues with former presidents Obama and Clinton both wanting to crack down on illegal immigration, and Obama deporting more illegals than any other president, what has liberals panties in a bunch over the prospect of a border wall?

The left spouts off about how the wall is “racist,” even though it’s not a race issue, but a legal issue.  But another argument of theirs is the cost and effectiveness of the wall.  I covered the effectiveness argument in the article “Why Build A Border Wall, They’ll Just Get In Anyway….Right?”  What it amounts to is that no one expects the wall to stop 100% of illegal immigration or other crimes that an open border makes so easy to do.  No one has ever claimed that, so their argument is a mute point.  This leaves the cost of the wall.

According to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky), if the taxpayers are saddled with the entire cost of the wall, it would cost every household a one-time payment of $120.  This is assuming that the cost of the wall doesn’t go beyond the estimated $12-$15 billion.  While some are extremely upset about this one-time payment of $120, it pales in comparison to the $30,000 that Obama saddled every U.S. citizen with when his administration added over $9 trillion to the national debt.  Like I said, a one-time payment of $120 per household doesn’t really seem that bad now does it?  If a one-time payment of $120 per household still seems like too much to strengthen U.S. national security (because that’s really what we are talking about when it come to border protection), consider this.  The American Chemistry Council found U.S. households throw out around $640 worth of just food every year.  That means YOU, yes you reading this article, probably wastes five times the money in just food every year, and you’re complaining about spending $120 once.  While I’m not a fan of the taxpayers paying anything toward the government, $120 doesn’t seem like a large sacrifice for border security.

I know, but how will it be paid for?  Right?

Well even if the government “bills” every household once, the benefits of the wall is projected to easily pay for itself within 10 years.

According to the Center for Immigration Studies, “the cost of the wall would quickly be offset by the savings to the government if fewer illegal immigrants arrive in the country over the next decade.”  So what does “fewer” illegals mean?  If the wall stops as low as 10% of illegals from crossing the border over the next decade, the wall is paid for.  That means, of the 1.5 million illegals that enter the U.S. every year, only 150 thousand (150,000) would have to be stopped.  Considering sites like and say that fences are one of the most effective ways of protecting your home, it’s reasonable to assume that a wall would be equally effective at protecting our country.

So outside of such a silly little thing like national security, what are the other potential benefits of the wall?

Considering the left is known for their “just one child” stance when it comes to gun control, they should absolutely support the wall, considering the number of child victims it could possibly save.  In Texas alone, nearly 1,000 Texas minors were sexually assaulted by illegal immigrants.  According to ICE (Immigration & Customs Enforcement) in the fiscal year 2011, there were 2,127 illegal immigrants deported that were convicted of any sex offenses, not just against minors. In 2012 it was 2,007, and in 2013 it was 2,124. Data for 2014 is incomplete. Mind you, this is just one state!

According to the FBI, from the years 2003 to 2009 (2009 being the most recent year with complete data), the murder rates for the entire United States varied from 5.0 to 5.8 per 100,000 inhabitants.  According to the GAO (Government Accountability Office), illegal immigrants of all nationalities committed 22 percent to 37 percent of those while being only 4 percent to 9 percent of the population.  This means that illegal immigrants commit murder at a 3 to 10 times higher rate than the rest of the population.  To put it in simpler numbers, illegal immigrants committed 25,064 murders from 2003 to 2009.  These are total numbers of murders committed by illegals; it is not the number of American citizens murdered by illegals.  Those numbers equate to 12 per day.  That is right; illegals murder 12 American citizens every day!  That is 21,900 since September 11th 2001 – 2013.

Imagine if we could stop even just 10% of this every year.  Thousands of lives could be potentially saved every year.

These are very real potential benefits of the wall, and all at the low low cost of a single $120 payment.
