How to dry basil?

Basil tastes good in many dishes, but unfortunately, the royal herb does not last that long. We’ll show you how to dry basil in just a few steps. So you have some of the delicious herbs longer. 

The basil plant always dies so quickly! You can dry basil in the oven or in the automatic dehydrator, but it’s even easier …

Dry the basil

If the basil is already in bloom, the aroma is often a bit bitter. Shortly before flowering, however, the basil is most aromatic – the perfect time to cut it. And this is how it works :

  1. Use scissors to cut the basil stalks off the plant. Make sure that these are not too short.
  2. Tie all of the stems together with twine or an elastic band.
  3. Hang the bundles in a dry, airy place.
  4. The basil should be dry after about two weeks. Remove the tape and pluck the leaves, lightly crumble them and store in an airtight container.

Basil in the oven

If the air-drying process takes too long for you, you can also dry basil in the oven. To do this, distribute the leaves on a baking sheet lined with baking paper, place the leaves next to each other and place them in the oven at a low temperature (approx. 50 degrees) for about 20 minutes.

Basil in the automatic dehydrator

Basil can be dried in the dehydrator just as easily as in the oven. Make sure that the basil leaves are not on top of each other, but next to each other. Even with this method, dry the herb at a low temperature (30 to 35 degrees).
