How to get rid of fleas?

Fighting fleas and getting rid of them in the long term – is that possible?

If from one day to the next there is an unbearable itching paired with a so-called flea ladder on the body, this strongly indicates a flea infestation. The small parasites are often introduced by pets and can trigger zoonoses in humans. Once they are in the household, it takes a long time to get rid of the entire flea population. So what’s the best way to fight them? In the following article, we get to know about How to get rid of fleas? So don’t skip the article from anywhere and read it carefully because it’s going to be very useful for you guys.

What are fleas

Fleas are blood-sucking parasites that are tiny. Their maximum height is 4 millimeters. They belong to a group of insects to get rid of fleas, but they cannot fly because they do not have wings. However, they have considerable bounce: they can jump up to 150 times their own size. If a person had this jumping ability, he would be able to jump up to 300 meters.

What types of fleas are there?

All over the world, there are over 2000 different flea species, in Germany, there are around 70 known species that are active all year round to get rid of fleas. The three most common are: the dog flea ( Ctenocephalides canis ), the human flea ( Pulex irritans ), and the cat flea ( Ctenocephalides felis ), the latter being the most common.

Adult fleas are brownish-gold to black in color and have strong hind legs. Their chitin shell is used for easy locomotion through the thick fur of their host animals. Most fleas infest birds and wildlife in the wild, but can easily be dragged into homes by pets and spread to humans.

With their proboscis, they pierce the host’s skin vertically and suck blood there. Since the flea can be easily disturbed and often needs a few stitches to find a blood vessel, this creates several puncture points in a row – the flea ladder.

Fight fleas in the home

Unfortunately, fleas are now active all year round. Due to the warm conditions in apartments during the winter months, it makes sense to regularly carry out flea prophylaxis. This reduces the likelihood of fleas infesting your pet.

Dogs and cats catch fleas very easily in nature. Due to their long fur, fleas can hold onto the animal very well and be transported into the apartment. In contrast to ticks, which only occur more frequently in some areas of Germany, fleas can be found everywhere in Germany. During the daily walk with the dog or an outdoor cat, it is very easy for fleas to jump on the animal.

Even brief contact with infected wild animals such as birds or a hedgehog is sufficient for the pet to catch fleas.

Getting rid of fleas – tips and tricks

To prevent flea bites from occurring in the first place, there are a few preventive measures that can be used. First of all, good hygiene in the home is an advantage.

Regular wet mopping of floors and daily vacuuming should be a matter of course for a pet owner. The vacuum cleaner bag should be changed daily in the event of an acute infestation.

Above all, the animal’s sleeping areas need to be cleaned well. Flea eggs die at temperatures above 45 ° C, which is why it is advisable to wash the basket and the blankets on which the animal is regularly hot. Soft toys and pillows must also be washed at least 45 ° C to remove any flea eggs.

If the dog has a permanent place in the car or camper, this must also be cleaned well.

Flea spray – a simple solution to fighting fleas

Cleaned surfaces can be sprayed prophylactically with a special flea spray. The SILBERKRAFT flea spray for the environment contains the active ingredient geraniol, which causes fleas to die within 24 hours as soon as they come into contact with it. Geraniol destroys the fleas ‘chitin shell and clogs the fleas’ airways. Flea eggs cover it with a film that interrupts the oxygen supply. The spray acts as an insecticide but is not harmful to pets. It can be used on textiles and smooth surfaces.

Home remedies for fleas

In addition to flea sprays, home remedies that are certified to have a good effect are useful against fleas.

The essential oils in rosemary are said to be a good natural repellent that will keep fleas from jumping on the pet. To do this, pour a liter of water over 4 large stalks of rosemary and bring to a boil for 30 minutes. Strain the stems and let the liquid cool. Before the animal leaves the house, pour the rosemary brew over the animal’s fur and let it dry. Important: Do not dry off the mixture!

Washing-up liquid

A somewhat strange method is to dissolve dish soap in water (this destroys the surface tension of the water) and place a burning, floating tea light in it. Supposedly, fleas are supposed to be attracted by the reflection of the flame and drown in the water. It remains to be seen whether this advice will work.

Because of the lactic acid bacteria, it contains, buttermilk is said to keep fleas from biting. Mix a cup with the food every day.

Vinegar water

Vinegar water is a real all-rounder when it comes to cleaning. This can be helpful in a ratio of 2: 1, especially for textiles. Flea eggs are often found in carpets and cannot be easily vacuumed away. If you now treat the carpet with vinegar and a brush, the flea eggs will loosen from the fibers of the carpet and can be removed.

Prevention against fleas

The most sensible way to keep fleas away is to put in place good prevention measures. This includes:

  • Vacuum the entire apartment every day (replace vacuum cleaner bags regularly if necessary)
  • Wipe smooth floors with a damp cloth (vinegar water is also suitable for this)
  • Wash textiles regularly – if possible at 60 ° C
  • Use flea sprays around the pet
  • Regularly groom the animal’s coat
  • Apply repellents to the animal’s coat before going for a walk
